Our hosts, D. and G. took us up to Hatcher’s Pass. Could I just say a thousand photo ops a minute? If I wasn’t asking D. to stop the van, J. was. He had bought a new camera and was anxious to use it.
The area where we headed was Matanuska-Susitana Borough (a borough is an Alaskan county) – often known simply as Matt-Su. The name comes from the Matanuska and the Susitana Rivers which are both contained within the borough.
Hatcher Pass run through the southwest part of the Talkeetna Mountains. The pass is named after Robert Hatcher who was a propsector and miner. The mountains are located approximately 12 miles to the north of Palmer and Wasilla and 26 miles to the east of Willow.
Our first stop was the Susitana River and then we sort of stopped every few minutes the rest of the way.
