Ok, I have it – an Amazing Race Challenge. Have a clue box at the entrance to Humboldt State Park (a park featuring redwoods) and tell the teams to find the “tall tree.”
We knew it was there somewhere because the brochure told us it was … and we were determined. This was our journey … (Seriously, this would be a great challenge.)
We’re ready to go and conquer today’s challenge – finding the tall tree.
Hmmm … they actually all look rather tall.
So the “tall tree” is beyond the ‘Founder’s tree” which we found and which looks fairly tall but is not the tall tree (because it’s the Founder’s tree)
Oops! this used to be a tall tree.
Yeah, a real tall tree – but there was a fall for the tree that was tall, and besides this is not the official tall tree.
Wow, looking up, I see a lot of tall trees, but not THE tall tree we’re looking for. Hmmm … frustrating, but being in a forest of tall trees is mindbogglingly cool – though it makes me feel rather short.
Looking a the wrong end of a tall tree.
Interesting burl in this tree, but I digress. We’re on a hunt for the tall tree, not the burl tree.
We see a sign by the side of the road that we are near the tall tree which is near the giant tree (they really need to think of more unique names at this park) so we keep looking!
Oh, no – the giant tree is on the other side of the river which had a tall tree lying on it’s side to make a bridge, but the bridge was washed away and we can’t see the giant tree from this side of the river among all the other giant (and tall) trees. Not sure we’re going to win this leg of the race.
Might be time to go to the other roadblock and look for a short tree.
Oh good gravy! (as the cowboys would say), we have found the tall tree – we know it’s the tall tree because that sign (that you can barely read) says it’s the tall tree.
