A little history about Ottawa

Ottawa is named after the Algonquin word “odawa”, which means “to trade”. The territory was to be successively settled by the French, British and Anglo-Saxons, attracted by the fur trade on the Ottawa River trade route and its strategic position.

In a dispute between the British and Anglo-Saxons, Lieutenant Colonel John By coordinated the construction of the Rideau Canal. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the early 19th century. It stretches 202 kilometres along the Rideau and Cataraqui Rivers south from Ottawa to Kingston Harbour. In winter, skating is common, making it the largest skating rink in the world, and from different parts of the city, at any time of the year, it offers a breathtaking view.

As soon as Canada gained its independence, and following the planning work of Lieutenant Colonel John By, the then Prime Minister of Canada, Wilfrid Laurier, became interested in a beautification programme for the city. His successor, William Lyon Mackenzie King, then commissioned town planner Jaques Greber to carry out more detailed planning in 1937.
